Housing Development

The development department team is committed to the development, rehabilitation and preservation of sorely needed affordable rental and ownership housing in the Cambridge area. Using a broad range of private and public resources and working closely with City and State agencies, Just-A-Start (JAS) develops stable, high quality and environmentally efficient homes for low and moderate income households. JAS’ affordable housing programs include:

Homeownership Development

Just-A-Start develops affordable homes for first-time homebuyers. Over the past 20 years, JAS has produced over 100 units of affordable housing for ownership. These units are affordable to families with incomes targeted between 60% – 100% of the area median income. All of the units are purchased pursuant to an Affordable Housing Agreement with the City of Cambridge, allowing the City to repurchase the units when sold at a restricted resale price. Just-A-Start’s most recent ownership developments in Cambridge are 424-430 Windsor Street and the 823 Main Street Condominiums.

Rental Housing Development

JAS develops and owns affordable rental housing targeted for lower income households. These units are managed by two management companies. SC Management Company manages the 273-unit JAS-affiliated housing at 402 Rindge Avenue. To inquire about vacancies at 402 Rindge Avenue, please call SC Management at 617-876-5855.

All other JAS-affiliated rental units (307 total) including our newest completed project, Elm Place, are managed by Maloney Properties Inc. Please call Maloney Properties Inc. at 617-661-7190 to inquire about an application.

Not all of the properties in the portfolio have open waiting lists; please contact the management office for availability of applications. We particularly encourage Section 8 mobile voucher holders to apply for these units.

Current Projects

Bishop Allen Apartments - In the Spring of 2012, Just A Start purchased this expiring use property near Central Square which consists of four eight-unit buildings. The buildings include 27 three-bedroom and 5 two-bedroom units and represent an important stock of affordable family housing units that were at risk of being converted to market rate housing. JAS intends to refinance and modernize the buildings in the Spring of 2014.

402 Rindge Avenue is the largest complex in the JAS portfolio.  Starting in 2014, JAS plans to refinance and modernize this 22 story tower.
